    One thing I noticed when assembling, even though the rear metal support bar is as high up on the back as I can get it to go, with the lid closed I have about 1/4 inch gap between that metal strip and the lid. Lid is attached as per instructions, so not sure why I have this gap? I'm predicting blowing rain may work its away inside

    From the colonies. I am assuming that somewhere on the packaging would be the three words that make me cringe; Made in China. A friend of mine is a metallurgist , and he is quick to point out that the Chinese have wide swings in their quality control standards. I have used chisels that had Made in Indonesia stamped on them; from opening the package, to the stones, then on to the recycling barrel in less than one day. My point is that you just don't know what grade of steel that you are getting. When I teach my students in hand woodworking, I recommend that they go to the pawn shop and find some old Stanley chisels, take them home and break out the stones, then practice joinery until your arms ache. At that point , I do recommend that they take out a loan on their first born and purchase one or two high end chisels for dovetailing and paring. Narex appears to be the hot ticket currently. Phil, this is a good straight forward review that you did, well done. I apologize that my comment is long winded, but I wanted students/newbies to be aware of possible variations in quality.

      Hi, yes I agree with you. There's no real way of knowing the true hardness rating of the metal with these budget chisels. I would also advise if you are on a tight budget and want some good chisels...look for the oldest ones you can find. Or maybe buy a set of Narex as they seem to have a good quality standard. Many budget chisel sets these days seem very similar from £5 to £30 I'm not sure if there is much difference in the metal quality. The old sets of Footprint chisels seem pretty good and you can still buy sets of those on eBay in good order. They seem like good heavy chisels for someone starting out on a tight budget. Thanks for your comments 👍🏻

    You made hydrochloric acid and it reacts differently with different metals man... plus 3 hours in acid is highly excessive. 5 minutes does just about the same thing for color and cleaning. Leaving them in there that long just does progressively more damage to the coins... this method is primarily used on pennies/copper. You should also dilute it with distilled water... especially for 3 hours...

    I'm amazed how reasonable these seem to be Phill, thanks for taking the time to review these for us, I guess a chisel is a pretty simple tool , and as you said edge retention is key, so it would be great if you could give us an update in a few months. A lot of people obsess about the exact formulation of the blade and it's hardness, but you have shown acceptable results are achievable at a cost anyone could afford as long as you know how to sharpen them properly. Btw, if you do have issues with the edge fracturing, it may well be worth establishing a secondary bevel at a steeper angle which should help make the edge more resilient.

    Great tip Phill ( pun intended ), I've done this a couple of times myself and they are a useful tool to have to hand and it's a good feeling to save a tool that appears to have no use. It's worth pointing out the importance of keeping the blade from over-heating too much by dipping it in water regularly and not being too aggressive with the grind, as this will soften the steel. The blade can also be shaped in a long square or triangular pyramid shape which is also useful as it can act like a reamer in opening up smaller holes.

    • @PhillWyattProjects
      @PhillWyattProjects 7 дней назад

      Great tip 😆 good one! Good points Andy I might make one of the square types in future. It might not seem like it on the video but I did take my time to grind it. I edited most of the grinding out. But yea a pot of water for dipping it to keep it cool is advisable.

  • @andyc972
    @andyc972 7 дней назад

    Thanks Phill, you certainly got a lot for your money there, the best bargains are definitely the Thor mallet and the Stanley 5000 screwdriver, but the side cutters and the Rabone rule are nice finds too. Old chisels especially firmer style are cheap as chips ( cheaper per Kg I reckon ) if you carry on purchasing I would recommend you set yourself some parameters, maybe only anything from Sheffield, or only Bevel edged, Wooden Handled, Brass Feruled etc. Otherwise you'll end up coming home with 20-30 every week ! It's hard to select by brand until you build knowledge as many stamps are hard to read and any labels are long gone. Have fun restoring them, it will be interesting to see if you chose to sell any on and what you can get for them, as you showed recently you can buy new chisels for just a few pounds so you pay your money and take your choice, but like you I rather like old chisels and the steel can be excellent !

    • @PhillWyattProjects
      @PhillWyattProjects 7 дней назад

      Cheers Andy you make some very good points. Currently my only parameter is price. If it's cheap I'll buy it 😆. I can't really resist any chisel if it's cheap enough. I might make a video about restoring and selling the chisels I have found as that could be interesting 🤔

    Hi Phill, More bargains at your local car boot sale, you never know what you could fined in these places, I do enjoy the car boot. looks like a decent bench wood vice there for £10 that is a good buy, I bought a wood vice about 20 years ago for £8 at Oswestry car boot sale , that was a good car boot sale it closed for good soon after. I go to Chirk Car boot sale which is 5 miles from Oswestry and 10 miles from Wrexham, it is a big car boot if the weather is nice. Always need Chisels and screwdrivers, some time you get better quality second hand ones than brand new one. You got some good hand tools there, as always a great video , catch you soon, Take care

      Cheers Shaun so far the local boot sale has been pretty good this year for old tools. I plan on doing a few restoration videos soon covering some of the tools I have bought this year. I remember going to a few car boot sales in Wales years ago. I went to a few in port talbot which had loads of bargains. The deals seem to be a bit better at Welsh car boots. Take care Shaun!
